The military lifestyle. It’s not really understood until you’re knee-deep in all it entails. Stress. Abandonment. Stress. Consistent inconsistencies. Dreaming of a glimmer of stability. Stress. Love. Joy. Heartbreak. Loneliness. Did I mention stress?
Military families are a rare breed in today’s culture. They love more in a short amount of time than anyone outside the lifestyle could ever imagine. They go anywhere from a few days to 6 months to a year (or sometimes more) without their service member. Schedules constantly change. They move often to different states or countries, sometimes with less than a week’s notice. They embrace the chaos out of love and devotion to their service member, who has next to no control over his or her life. Their children learn at young ages to cope with emotions few other children fully experience: anger, abandonment, sadness, burden, frustration, and sometimes feel responsible for why their mom or dad is gone for such long periods of time.
Being a part of the military family lifestyle makes me appreciate my time in the service much more. I can honestly say, it was a lot easier being in the military without a family than it is to be a family watching our service member deploy. Support systems and developing a “village” is imperative to keeping your sanity and getting through the time missing your other half.
Just because we are focusing on military families in this post, doesn’t mean families of other professions don’t apply. Any family who deals with a traveling parent can benefit from these as well, such as truck drivers, oil field workers, military contractors, airline workers… etc.
Why do military families need essential oils?
I’ve also found essential oils to be especially helpful coping with feelings and the overwhelm of suddenly needing to take care of everything between home care, child care, and pet care, solo. Emotions are not just a phenomenon of the mind. Emotions are stored in our physical body and can directly affect our health. Essential oils are incredible for helping balance emotions and bring an overall feeling of wellness. Top 25 Essential Oils for Military Families
The most common emotions experienced by military families include: abandonment, anxiousness, bitterness, burden, feeling defeated, frustrations, hate, obsessiveness, sadness, insecurity, self-pity, absent-mindedness, disappointment, negativity, depression, irritability, mood swings, grief, tired, weak, and sometimes experience some emotional trauma. Here is a list of essential oils (mostly blends exclusive to Young Living) to help you or a military family you love cope with the military lifestyle.
How to use these oils: you can wear the oils listed below as perfume/cologne by diluting one with a carrier oil (any seed-based oil, like coconut oil) ~ one drop of essential oil per one ml of carrier oil. Or you can add a couple drops to an atomizer of water to create a spray. You can diffuse it in either a diffuser or add a couple drops to a piece of leather, felt, or clay jewelry. You can also add a few drops to a cup of baking soda and epsom salts for a relaxing bath.
Acceptance. Acceptance essential oil blend is composed of rosewood, geranium, frankincense, blue tansy, sandalwood and neroli essential oils. It helps you accept the circumstances at hand that are stressing you out. In my opinion, it’s the single most important essential oil blend to have when your spouse is gone for long periods of time. It specifically helps with feelings of abandonment, bitterness, burdened, frustration, hate, obsessiveness, and sadness. Sometimes these emotions come on one at a time. Other times these emotions occur all at once, initiating feeling completely defeated. Acceptance can help you cope with and reduce those overwhelming feelings that make you the need to drink alcohol, which is especially nice considering drinking alcohol doesn’t make any of those feelings better and in many cases can make those feelings worse. Acceptance helps your body overcome/release. creates a feeling of security. releases self-pity, ideal for any life transition.
In addition to the use suggestions above, Acceptance essential oil blend is best used applied topically (diluted) over your liver – especially when feeling lethargic. It’s also excellent to apply behind your ears, on your chest, face, heart, neck, thymus, wrists, and sacral chakra.
Clarity. Clarity essential oil blend is composed of basil, cardamom, rosemary, peppermint, rosewood, geranium, lemon, palmarosa, ylang ylang, bergamot, roman chamomile, and jasmine essential oils. It is incredible for helping focus, combatting absent-mindedness, and increasing your short-term memory. We all need a little extra focus, especially when trying to play mom and dad simultaneously while the dishwasher stops working, a section of the fence falls, the dog pukes on the floor right before the kid steps in it to track said puke around the house, and the toilet overflows – all in the same hour. Military spouses respect Murphy’s Law, especially when it seems like everything that can go wrong does go wrong while their spouse is deployed. A little extra focus and clarity is a God send, especially when you’re being pulled in every possible direction.
In addition to the uses described above, Clarity essential oil blend is best used (diluted) on the back of our neck, on your temples, and on your wrists. I especially love it diffused with a drop of orange. Clarity also blends really well with the En-R-Gee blend, Joy blend, and peppermint essential oil that we will talk about later in this post. Clarity is photosensitive. You should avoid direct sunlight to any place you apply it topically for 12 hours.
Copaiba. Copaiba essential oil has many uses that makes it an oil easy to use ever day. The most popular use for this oil is to add it to other oils to enhance their effects. By itself, copaiba is known to ease nervous tension, reduce stress, and ease anxiousness. Its relaxing, elevating, and emotionally balancing.
To use copaiba, add it to any essential oil or blend you’re using. Dilute before placing on your skin, smell it right out of the bottle, or drop right into a diffuser.
Dream Catcher. Dream Catcher essential oil blend is composed of sandalwood, tangerine, ylang ylang, black pepper, bergamot, juniper, anise, and blue tansy essential oils. While this blend was initially created to help you enhance and visualize your dreams of the future, it may also reduce nightmares and help your kids sleep in their own beds while your spouse is gone. It is also great to help cope with and overcome disappointment and negativity, which are felt often at extreme levels by every member of every military family. Dream Catcher is best used when applied (diluted) to the forehead (brow chakra), temples, behind the ears and on the base of your neck (throat chakra). It also makes a great linen spray (and monster repellant spray for kids). This is a photosensitive oil – if you apply it to your skin, please wait 3-6 hours before that location comes in contact with direct sunlight.
Aside from the uses described above, Dream Catcher is best when applied to your forehead (brow chakra), temples, behind you rears, and at the base of your neck (throat chakra). It is a photosensitive oil, where you should avoid direct sunlight to any location you apply it topically for at least 3-6 hours.
En-R-Gee. En-R-Gee essential oil blend is composed of rosemary, juniper, lemongrass, nutmeg, balsam fir, clove, and black pepper essential oils. It won’t give you that caffeine/sugar rush your coffee and energy drinks give, but it does help you feel more energetic and less lethargic by providing adrenal support. Your adrenal glands are located just above your kidneys, and are a part of your endocrine system. Supporting your adrenal glands is imperative to your hormonal balance, which is important for so many organs to work. Keeping your adrenals supported helps combat fatigue, among other issues, keeping you energized naturally throughout those long days, weeks, and months. Keeping you energized and moving also brings back that zest for life, since fatigue is often associated with feeling mopey and cascades into just not feeling like doing anything while you lay on the couch flipping through the TV channels and wondering why you can’t get motivated to even check the mail.
In addition to the application methods above, En-R-Gee is best applied to your wrists, behind your ears, or massaged on the back of your neck. This oil absolutely needs to be diluted! No tough guy, “It will be fine straight out of the bottle” nonsense. Please, if you or your children have epilepsy, avoid this one.
Envision. Envision essential oil blend is composed of spruce, geranium, orange, lavender, sage, and rose essential oils. It is especially useful when you’re nearing the time of your loved one’s return to be able to look forward to what is to come and envision how life will be again after the military member reintegrates with his/her family. This is an excellent oil to diffuse once you receive orders too and need to look forward to new adventures in a new location and a new home. Envision helps reduce feeling defeated.
As with the other blends we’ve talked about, this oil blend is great to apply diluted to your wrists and temples. It’s really good paired with Acceptance, Clarity, and Valor too.
Forgiveness. Forgiveness essential oil blend is composed of melissa, geranium, frankincense, rosewood, sandalwood, angelica, lavender, lemon, jasmine, roman chamomile, bergamot, ylang ylang, palmarosa, helichrysum, and rose essential oils in a base of sesame seed oil. It helps you move past emotional barriers and deal with feelings of abandonment, bitterness, defeat, grief/sorrow, hate, and obsessiveness. It helps foster feelings of love, which is especially important for children who may be aware enough to know mommy or daddy is gone but don’t understand why or why they aren’t coming back soon. Forgiveness is essential for dealing with the “mommy guilt” that hits you from every direction between not being able to bring your spouse home when your children are missing him or her, or for feeling responsible for uprooting your kids from their friends and home to move to a new location.
Because this blend is pre-diluted in sesame oil, you do not have to further dilute it, though I do out of habit diluting every essential oil and blend I use. It’s just as effective diluted again. Forgiveness is best used when massaged clockwise over your navel area, over your heart, and placed behind your ears and on your wrists. It is fantastic when paired with Valor essential oil blend on your feet and cheeks, Joy essential oil blend on your ears and chest, and Gathering essential oil blend on your forehead.
Frankincense. Frankincense essential oil is one of the most versatile essential oils, helping support your body in almost every way possible. Emotionally, it helps balance emotions when you’re feeling depressed, disappointed, frustrated, and irritable, putting you in better spirits.
There really isn’t any way you can’t use Frankincense essential oil. If you’re religious or spiritual, adding a drop to the crown of your head will help intensify your prayer or meditation, making you feel closer to the Creator and more connected to life. It’s great to pair with a yoga session too! There isn’t an oil that it doesn’t blend well with.
Harmony. Harmony essential oil blend is composed of lavender, sandalwood, ylang ylang, frankincense, orange, angelica, geranium, hyssop, spruce, sage lavender, rosewood, lemon, jasmine, roman chamomile, bergamot, palmarosa, and rose. It helps with coming to terms with disappointment and mellows out mood swings. It’s great for creating a more positive atmosphere and for emotional healing.
Harmony is best used wen applied by diluting and rubbing between your hands in a clockwise motion and placed over your chakras. It’s also good to dilute and apply to your ears, feet, and over your heart.
Please avoid this oil if you have epilepsy. Do not apply to your skin while pregnant. And avoid direct sun exposure to areas its been applied topically for 3-6 hours due to it being a photosensitive oil.
Hope. Hope essential oil blend is made with mellissa, myrrh, juniper, and spruce essential oils in a base of almond oil. Hope is great for coping with disappointment, frustrations, grief, sorrow, and irritability. It is another one of those oils I make sure we always keep on hand as it has been instrumental with providing extra peace, sense of security, and helping us release emotional blocks.
Because this oil is in a base of almond oil, you do not need to dilute it when applying topically, though I usually do anyways (doing so also helps it last longer and it’s just as effective). Its most effective when applied to the outer edges of your ears, over your heart, temples, solar plexus, across the back of your neck, on your feet, and on your wrists, though it really can be applied anywhere you choose and is an excellent choice for perfume/cologne.
Joy. Joy essential oil blend is made with bergamot, ylang ylang, geranium, rosewood, lemon, mandarin, jasmine, roman chamomile, palmarosa, and rose essential oils. It dispels feelings of abandonment, disappointment, grief, sorrow, inadequacies, obsessiveness, and sadness. It’s great for balancing out mood swings, and instills uplifting feelings of being loved and happiness.
Joy is best used diluted and rubbed over your heart. It is also very effective rubbed on you rears, neck, thymus, temples, and on your wrists. It’s also nice to add to a damp cloth and tossed in the dryer during the last 15 or so minutes of the cycle to make your clothes smell great. Joy is photosensitive, so please avoid direct sunlight over areas it is topically applied to within 12 hours of application. Joy pairs well with Hope, Live with Passion, and Valor essential oil blends.
I keep Joy diluted with a roller fitment on top of the bottle. Its my “go-to” anytime I feel overwhelmed or need a quick perfume. It helps me when my husband is underway. It helped me through my “baby blues.” It helps my son handle the overwhelming emotions that comes with being a toddler. Its one of those oils that whether or not my husband is gone, we have some around. Often, I use it as a perfume too. My favorite way of wearing joy lately is by placing a few drops on the felt pad of a diffuser necklace along with a couple drops of Clarity or lemon.
Lavender. Lavender essential oil is known as the swiss army knife of essential oils and should have its own space in any essential oil loving family’s oil stash. Aside from all its health benefits, lavender specifically helps subdue anger and anxiousness, effectively producing a more calming and soothing atmosphere.
While there isn’t really a way you can use lavender incorrectly, my favorite use with this oil is diffused combined with tangerine and Northern Lights Black Spruce for relaxing close to bed time (also relaxing and soothing for my toddler). We also enjoy adding some lavender to the Peace and Calming or Stress Away essential oil blends. It’s fantastic dropped in baking soda and epsom salts for a warm, relaxing bath. It’s wonderful in a massage oil. Its one of my most used oil when creating my own blends. Lavender really blends well with just about everything, especially with anything citrus, chamomile, clary sage, and geranium.
Lemon. Lemon essential oil is a lot like lavender and frankincense in regards to how much it helps with. Emotionally, lemon helps with sadness, anxiousness, and mood swings. It is bright and uplifting.
Lemon, like most citrus oils is photosensitive. You should avoid direct sunlight to any area exposed to lemon essential oil or blends containing lemon for at least 12 hours. Its great blended with lavender and peppermint in the diffuser. It also blends very well with chamomile, eucalyptus, fennel, frankincense, geranium, juniper, peppermint, sandalwood, and ylang ylang.
Live with Passion. Live with Passion essential oil blend contains clary sage, ginger, sandalwood, jasmine, angelica, cedar wood, helichrysum, patchouli, neroli, and melissa essential oils. This essential oil blend is emotionally balancing, uplifting, strengthening, and stabilizing. It is encouraging and boosts confidence, bringing back that zest for life that often seems to diminish when our other half is gone for long periods of time.
Best places to apply this oil, if you do so topically, is to dilute and apply to your wrists, temples, chest, and forehead. It’s also great to add 2-4 drops into a cup of epsom salts and baking soda for a rejuvenating bath. And again, makes a wonderful perfume/cologne.
Peace and Calming. Peace and Calming essential oil blend is composed of tangerine, orange, ylang ylang, patchouli, and blue tansy. It dispels the feeling of needing to drink alcohol, anger, and mood swings. It produces a calming atmosphere and helps your mind and body relax.
Peace and Calming essential oil blend is best applied diluted topically under your nose, on the back of your neck, on your back, or on your feet. I love it the most diffused with a couple drops of lavender or with epsom salts in a bath. I don’t topically apply this oil often because I enjoy it diffused so much. This oil blend is photosensitive, so if you use it topically avoid direct sunlight exposure to that area for 3-6 hours. Lavender and chamomile are excellent oils to pair with the Peace and Calming essential oil blend.
Peppermint. Peppermint essential oil is great for easing anger and absent-mindedness, increasing energy, combating emotional eating (including loss of appetite), increasing memory, and reducing frustrations and mood swings. It’s another essential to always have on hand. Plus, is divine adding 2 drops of Peppermint Vitality essential oil to your brownie mix.
Definitely make sure you always dilute when using peppermint essential oil. Use cautiously if you have a history of high blood pressure and if you’re pregnant or nursing. We love pairing peppermint with a floral and citrus aroma (like with lavender and lemon, or with geranium and lemon).
Present Time. Present Time essential oil blend is composed of neroli, spruce, and ylang ylang in a base of almond oil. It helps subdue feelings of disappointment, frustration, grief, sorrow, irritability, and obsessiveness. It also helps to stabilize mood swings. This blend was designed to keep you in the moment, instead of dwelling too much on the past or worry too much about the future. “We cannot live yesterday, we cannot live tomorrow; we have to live today.”
Because this oil blend is already pre-diluted with almond oil, you do not need to dilute it further, though you can and it will still be just as effective (I still dilute it as I do with any other oil I use). If applying topically, its most effective when rubbed in a circular, clockwise motion over your thymus (down your sternum), close your eyes, and tap 3 times with your index and middle fingers (thumping your thymus helps to re-center and stabilize your body’s energy flow). It’s also effective applied to your neck and forehead. Harmony and Hope essential oil blends are wonderful companion oils to Present Time too.
Release. Release essential oil blend contains ylang ylang, lavender, geranium, and sandalwood in a base of olive oil. Release is emotionally soothing and reduces feelings of being burdened, grief, sorrow, hate, and anger (especially when applied over the liver). It helps you to cope with, overcome and release negative, nagging emotions. Once you let go of negative emotions, it’s easier to progress through the time away from your other half, and handle the associated emotions more efficiently.
Because this oil blend is already pre-diluted with olive oil, you do not need to dilute it further, though feel free to – being in the habit of always diluting your essential oils and blends makes it easier than trying to remember which ones need to be diluted and which ones are already pre-diluted. It works the best applied over your liver (either via massage or a compress). It’s also very effective rubbed on your ears, the bottom of your feet, and worn as a perfume/cologne. I enjoy this one diffused too. To enhance your experience with using Release, rotate massaging Valor and Harmony essential oil blends on the bottom of your feet.
Sacred Mountain. Sacred Mountain essential oil blend is composed of spruce, ylang ylang, fir, and cedar wood essential oils. It helps curb grief, sorrow, obsessiveness, and feelings of “I can’t.” This blend may help you find security within yourself and is fantastic to use during any life-altering event (such as deployments). This blend creates feelings of strength, empowerment, grounding, and protection. Sacred Mountain was inspired by a Native American ritual where the three conifer oils added were symbolically used to represent the umbrella they create in protecting the earth and bringing energy in from the universe. At night, the animals in the wild lie under these trees too for the sense of protection, recharging, and rejuvenation they experience in doing so. This is another oil I don’t personally go without.
I love Sacred Mountain diffused, and in bath soap. It’s a fantastic perfume/cologne too. When applying topically, this blend is best used diluted and applied to your solar plexus, base of your head and back of your neck, the crown of your head, the behind your ears, over your thymus, and on your wrists. PLEASE make sure you don’t forget to dilute this one.
Sensation. Sensation essential oil blend is made with rosewood, ylang ylang, and jasmine. This blend has such a beautiful, feminine scent that reminds me a lot of cherry blossoms. It is extremely uplifting, refreshing, and hormonally balancing. It initiates feelings of love, melting away the depressed loneliness.
There are many uses for this oil, but for the sake of staying on theme, it is beautiful in a lotion (Young Living does sell this in a lotion) and worn as a perfume.
Stress Away. Stress Away essential oil blend is composed of copaiba, lime, cedar wood, ocotea, and lavender essential oils infused in vanilla. This oil blend is calming, melting away tension and enabling you to relax.
I keep this one diluted in a roller bottle too and in my bag for easy access. Having a quick swipe of the roller top across your wrists and the back of your neck helps so much, especially while out in stressful situations (which some deployments can feel like all the time). It’s also great diffused and added to epsom salts for a nice bath.
Tangerine. Tangerine essential oil contains esters and aldehydes, which are sedating and calming to the nervous system. When diffused with Marjoram essential oil, it can soothe grief, anger, and shock. By itself it is soothing, can reduce depressed feelings, and help you relax.
Diffused, tangerine is good alone or blended with basil, bergamot, chamomile, clary sage, frankincense, geranium, grapefruit, lavender, lemon, orange, lime, or spruce. My favorite is to diffuse with lavender and Northern Lights Black Spruce to my toddler and me relax before bedtime.
3 Wise Men. Three Wise Men essential oil blend is a blend of highly spiritual oils including sandalwood, juniper, frankincense, spruce, and myrrh in a base of almond oil. It specifically does wonders helping ditch feeling void. It helps release negative emotions, and brings a sense of grounding through memory recall and often blocks negative feelings and memories.
Diffusing 3 Wise Men can help create reverence feelings and enhance spiritual consciousness. When applying topically, you are welcome to dilute, but don’t need to. The best places to apply topically is to the crown of your head in a clockwise motion, on your neck, solar plexus, and clockwise on your thymus. It also makes a great perfume/cologne.
Transformation. Transformation essential oil blend is composed of lemon, peppermint, clary sage, sandalwood, blue spruce, sacred frankincense, cardamom,palo santo, and ocotea essential oils. Transformation essential oil blend helps stimulate your conscious mind, making decisions and managing emotions much easier. It lessens the burdened, grief, sorrow, and sadness.
When applying topically, Transformation is most effected diluted and applied to the forehead and over the heart. It’s also very effective diffused too.
Valor. Valor essential oil blend is the most popular essential oil blend Young Living offers because there is so much this oil can help with. Its composed of spruce, rosewood, blue tansy, and frankincense. It helps curb feelings of abandonment, bitterness, disappointment, frustration, grief, sorrow, irritability, obsessiveness, and sadness. It releases feelings of self-pity, and lessens those depressed, burdened feelings that often lead to mood swings. Valor is fantastic at building confidence, which is especially useful when dealing with home contractors while your spouse is gone, or when you feel defeated by managing wild children alone for long periods of time.
Support Your Immune System, Lower Your Stress
If there is one thing that is common among military families, it’s that inconsistency is the most consistent thing they will experience. This brings on added and often undue stress for service members and their families. Stress is a huge culprit for lowering immune system. Lemongrass, Mountain Savory, Peppermint, Purification blend, Tea Tree, and Thieves blend all help support the immune system.
Essential oils can also help reduce your stress levels by helping you relax and deal with emotions that contribute to causing stress. Lavender, Peace and Calming, Stress Away, lemon, and tangerine all are great oils to help lower your body’s stress levels. Peace & Calming with lavender in the diffuser or added to bath salts for a relaxing bath is incredibly soothing. Stress Away used the same way or applied diluted to your temples, wrists, and the back of your neck is also delightfully relaxing.
Lowering the stress load your body is trying to manage is also critical for decent sleep. Cedarwood essential oil, Peace and Calming essential oil blend and the Tranquil essential oil blend are lovely for creating that relaxing feeling to help promote restful sleep. My favorite sleep blend is dripping a few drops of Northern Lights Black Spruce, Lavender, and Tangerine in the diffuser.
Don’t lose your appetite. Make sure you eat!
Sometimes service member spouses lose their appetites. Bergamot, nutmeg, ginger, and spearmint are all excellent oils to keep on hand if you’ve noticed you don’t feel like eating. These are especially important to have on hand if you notice you’re getting dizzy and feeling ill from the lack of nourishment loss of appetite brings on.
If you’re more of the “eat your feelings” type (like I often am, especially when it comes to chocolate), Slique Essence essential oil blend contains Grapefruit, Tangerine, Spearmint, Lemon, and Ocotea essential oils with a bit of Stevia to sweeten the flavor. It is fantastic for curbing emotional eating (and helping with weight loss)!
Take Time for Self-Awareness
With service members gone for long periods of time, this gives spouses an excellent time for self discovery. Taking time for activities like yoga and meditation or prayer are incredibly important and worth consistently making time for them in your schedule. Yoga is incredible, especially when adding Awaken essential oil blend. Envision essential oil blend is fantastic too, to help imagine life when the service member returns.
Helping Cope with Kids
Military families have different sets of challenges than most families experience: coping with kids who are frustrated about losing a parent for deployments. Any blend containing Rosewood is excellent for promoting gentleness. Any blend containing jasmine essential oil will help tame harshness. For us, we diffuse a lot of Release, Present Time, and Forgiveness essential oil blends. Those are beneficial to them as they try to cope with an overwhelming amount of emotion made worse by limited understanding, but it’s also beneficial for you as the caregiver to forgive your children for acting out on the emotions that overwhelm and scare them. 3 Wise Men is an excellent “heavy hitter” to soothe everyone when emotions seem to max out.
Separations especially hurtful
Every so often a military family will have an especially stressful separation from their service member during deployment and truly need extra levels of support, which often can be difficult to come by. Applying Release to the bottom of your feet and over your liver, Joy over your heart, 3 Wise Men on the crown of your head at the same time may help. Envision, Forgiveness, Hope and Release essential oil blends all may help your body unlock and release emotional trauma. If you find yourself not particularly liking any of those smells during your emotional trauma, chances are you need that oil the most to help you unlock those feelings. Try exposing yourself to it a little at a time, or placing the oil diluted on your feet and then covering your feet with socks.
Copiaba is another must have to add to your arsenal of oils. It is highly regarded for its ability to magnify the effects of other oils its added to. Need an extra boost of support? Add copaiba to any oil you’re using. Plus, copaiba also helps calm the anxiousness that comes with unanticipated life altering events, such as losing your spouse to a deployment or training that takes him/her away from the home.
